What is a Kissing Ball?

For centuries mistletoe has been believed to have mystical powers.  Folklore customs from this magical plant have been passed down through the centuries.

Mistletoe still holds a certain magical appeal today, the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe originates from an eighteenth-century English custom of kissing under a kissing ball.  At Christmas time a young lady standing under a ball of mistletoe, brightly trimmed with evergreens, ribbons, and ornaments, could not refuse to be kissed.  Such a kiss could mean deep romance or lasting friendship.  If the girl remained unkissed, she could not expect to marry the following year.

Whether we believe it or not, it’s always a bit of fun to have a kissing ball or some mistletoe around at Christmas celebrations.  Even if the traditional beliefs have long been forgotten, the custom of exchanging a kiss under the mistletoe can still be found in many countries around the world.  If a couple in love kisses under the mistletoe, it is interpreted as a promise to marry, and a magical blessing of a long and happy life.

You can make one yourself if you have time, click here for instructions on how to make your own kissing ball, but I recommend saving your time and buying this beautiful already-made one.  Even if you do have the time, you probably couldn’t make one for this price!

This kissing ball will make an elegant addition to your holiday display.  It has acrylic berry clusters and cherries attached to a Christmas ball.  Scattered throughout the clusters are 35 clear mini lights on green wire, accented by green holly leaves.  Attached is a shiny red cloth loop to make placement easy.   Hang this item over your doorway, from your ceiling or on your walls. It has an 8 inch diameter and a 6 foot end cord.  It even comes with a few spare berry cluster inserts.  UL listed for indoor use only.

The Christmas Depot also has an unbelievable  selection of lights, garland, trees, and decorations (which make great gifts, too, if you don’t know what to get someone and need ideas.)  I was surprised to see things like outdoor fireplaces and fire pits.  You really need to check it out for yourself!  You’ll feel like a kid in a candy shop! :)
